In conjunction with Pittsfield Cultural Council, artist Michael Carty has created this mural called "Gaia" in downtown Pittsfield during the Fall of 2020.
According to the artist “I chose this theme in hopes of instilling a love and admiration for the beauty of nature in the many youth at the YMCA and Boys and Girls Club. The relatively symmetrical design is intended to represent the earth’s often exploited balance of flora and fauna.”
The central figure of the mural is the image of the Greek earth goddess Gaia who represents "Mother Earth". Flanking Gaia are swallows ans monarch butterflies representing fauna. Gaia has flowers in her hair representing fauna.
