The cemetery was the first designated burial place in Darwin, reserved in 1870 and officially closed in 1919,although some of the headstones date from the 1980's.
The cemetery contains about 600 graves of which ninety memorials are evident, some large and imposing and built from Victorian era granite, while others are small and simply made from local stone. There are a number of Japanese headstones (including those of pearl divers)
