The city is Waalwijk is known for several things, one of them being a large leather / shoe city, which was led by Van Haren. This statue honors the 50th anniversary of the Van Haren company.

It was a time of crisis when Ivo van Haren opened his first shoe store on Hoogstraat in Rotterdam in 1929.

In 1939 Van Haren bought one of the largest tanneries in the Netherlands in Waalwijk. More and more shops were then opened. Ivo van Haren dies in 1965 and is succeeded by his sons Jacques and Johann van Haren. They know how to expand the company even further. When at the end of 1984 Jacques van Haren has to decide to give the company a new owner for health reasons, an organization with a similar corporate culture is sought. vanHaren had to remain a family business. The choice for the successful German family business Deichmann Schuhe was quickly made: Deichmann, the largest shoe company in Europe, has been the parent organization since 1985.
