Het Leuvense stadhuis wordt doorgaans vereenzelvigd met de rijk versierde laatgotische vleugel aan de Grote Markt. Die maakt echter deel uit van een groter complex dat het volledige bouwblok beslaat tussen de Grote Markt, Naamsestraat, Muntstraat en Boekhandelstraat. De verschillende delen van het complex zijn geschikt rondom een binnenplaats, het Vrijthof. Aan de oostzijde staat het oudste deel van het stadhuiscomplex: het achterste huis, gebouwd door Sulpitius van Vorst en Jan II Keldermans tussen 1439 en 1445. De beroemde vleugel aan de Grote Markt is het voorste huis, gebouwd van 1448 tot 1469 onder leiding van Matthijs de Layens. De hiertegen aangebouwde conserverije aan de Naamsestraat werd gebouwd in 1461. De zuidelijke helft van het complex bestaat uit jongere toevoegingen. Aan de Naamsestraat strekt zich de Dekenij van de lakenwevers uit, gebouwd in 1680 nadat de universiteit de oude lakenhal volledig had ingenomen. De vleugel aan de Muntstraat dateert uit 1938. Het politiekantoor aan de Grote Markt en Boekhandelstraat werd gebouwd als corps de garde in 1821-1822.

The Leuven town hall is usually identified with the richly decorated late Gothic wing on the Grote Markt. However, it is part of a larger complex that covers the entire building block between the Grote Markt, Naamsestraat, Muntstraat and Boekhandelstraat. The different parts of the complex are arranged around a courtyard, the Vrijthof. On the east side is the oldest part of the town hall complex: the rear house, built by Sulpitius van Vorst and Jan II Keldermans between 1439 and 1445. The famous wing on the Grote Markt is the front house, built from 1448 to 1469 under the direction of Matthijs the Layens. The conservatory on Naamsestraat was built in 1461. The southern half of the complex consists of younger additions. The Dekenij of the cloth weavers stretches along Naamsestraat, built in 1680 after the university had completely occupied the old cloth hall. The wing on the Muntstraat dates from 1938. The police station on the Grote Markt and Boekhandelstraat was built as a corps de garde in 1821-1822.
