This peace pole is set up on the 21 of September 2012 after 10 years of celebrating International Day of Peace in Zutphen
The Peace Pole Project was started by Masahisa Goi in 1955 as an international symbol of peace
He decided to dedicate his life to spread the message "May peace prevail on earth". The project was a response to the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
There is now a worldwide network of 200.000 peace poles in 190 countries.
This Peace pole is made from sustainable acacia wood. The texts are on perspex panels. The rule is that every post will be written in English: May peace preveal on Earth. In addition, one may choose to put the same text on the post in other languages.
In Zutphen they opted for Dutch, English,Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Turkish, and very special Braille.
The small mosaic at the bottom of the pole shows the connection of the city with the two rivers that float through it (Berkel and IJssel river).
