"Le phare de Calais est un phare d’atterrissage. C’est une aide à la navigation pour les navires qui entrent au port, et un repère pour ceux qui croisent dans le Détroit du Pas-de-Calais, le plus fréquenté du monde.
Jusqu’au 19ème siècle, c’est la Tour du Guet qui servait de phare. Le nouveau phare s’est allumé pour la première fois le 15 octobre 1848. Nous avons donc fêté ses 150 ans à la fin du siècle dernier.
Si vous l’observez de l’extérieur, vous apercevrez une bâtisse qui lui est accolée. C’est l’ancien logement du gardien. En effet, il fallait absolument habiter sur place pour entretenir le phare lorsqu’il fonctionnait à l’huile puis au pétrole et que son mécanisme de rotation devait être remonté régulièrement. Aujourd’hui le phare fonctionne à l’électricité. Il est entièrement automatisé. Le métier de gardien de phare s’est transformé en technicien des phares et balises. Ce sont eux qui assurent la maintenance de tous les équipements de signalisation maritimes de Calais. Il y a le phare et son antenne Goniométrique, mais aussi les balises en mer, les feux de jetée, et les balises d’entrée de port. Tous ces appareils sont placés sous leur responsabilité.
A côté du logement s’élève le phare proprement dit.Construit sur un ancien bastion militaire, sa tour mesure 51 mètres de haut. Le plan focal de sa lampe est situé à 58 mètres de haut par rapport au niveau de la mer. Il vous faudra monter 271 marches pour parvenir au sommet.
Le fût est orné d’une étoile. Les étoiles ont toujours servi de repères aux marins et aux grands voyageurs. Rien d’étonnant donc que le service des Phares et Balises de France l’ait choisie comme symbole.
Le phare de Calais se reconnaît de jour, à sa couleur blanche et à son manchon noir. Impossible de le confondre avec son voisin de Grand fort Philippe décoré d’une spirale blanche et noire ou avec celui de Berck rouge et blanc."
