Duncan Balfour Cox opened a department store in 1867 at 100 Railroad Avenue, Ashland, Virginia, and the family operated the business through 1955. It was sold to and continued under the Cox, Inc. name by Joseph Andrews and Fairfax Davis until about 1960.
The 1913 D.B. Cox and Company Department Store building stands to this day and is now owned by McKinney & Co., an engineering firm with offices on the second floor and home to The Iron Horse restaurant. A cast metal plaque mounted to the east wall which faces the tracks reads:

"...Cox department store was opened shortly after the Civil War, in 1867, by...Duncan Balfour Cox. It had grown from a small general store into a two-story emporium, whose address read 100 Railroad Avenue, at the crossroads of State Highway 54 and the RF&P tracks, just a stone's throw from the railroad's quaint slate-roofed depot. The stately brick buildings and columned antebellum fraternity houses of Junior Ivy Leage Randolph-Macon College accounted for a significant portion of trade in the second-floor men's department. The first floor was awash in fashions for the ladies of the town who tended their gardens and attended the Ashland Women's Club, as they had every second Tuesday since the war -- the Civil War, that is." -- "Virginia's Legendary Santa Trains" by Donna Strother Deekens and Doug Riddell; The History Press, 2013
