The open-air swimming pool on the Auedamm, which used to be called the Städtisches Flußbad, was founded by Philipp Scheidemann when he was Lord Mayor of Kassel. At that time there were only two bathing establishments in the Fulda in the summer: Sinning and Gerhard, both private companies that were built out of wood every summer on the left bank of the river approximately opposite the pumping station with a jetty over the Fulda. The von Sinning died after the First World War. Gerhard, who was nicknamed "Schwimmi", recruited its visitors exclusively from the upper classes of Kassel. The residents of the old town, especially their children, swam unsupervised and unprotected from the passing gravel ships in the Fulda, especially from the Bleichen. Philipp Scheidemann had also romped in the water there as a boy and got to know the dangers of such risky swimming.
In May 1923 he opened the Flussbad, which was immediately taken over enthusiastically by the people of Kassel. In the summer of 1925, 15,000 visitors were counted. Until then, there was no other city that had created such a bathing complex for the population. As a result, a generous model of the entire Kassel facilities at the important exhibition "Gesolei" (for health, social welfare and physical exercise) in Düsseldorf attracted a lot of attention, especially among the participants of the German Association of Cities that took place there.
For 32 million euros, a new outdoor and indoor pool with a sauna area has been built from the former outdoor pool. In 2009, the planning for the bathroom was estimated at 24 million euros.

Das Freibad am Auedamm, das früher den Namen Städtisches Flußbad trug, ist eine Gründung Philipp Scheidemanns, als er Oberbürgermeister in Kassel war. Es gab dort damals im Sommer nur zwei Badeanstalten in der Fulda: Sinning und Gerhard, beides Privatunternehmen, die aus Holz jeden Sommer am linken Flußufer ungefähr gegenüber der Pumpstation mit einem Steg über die Fulda aufgebaut wurden. Die von Sinning ging nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg ein. Die von Gerhard, der mit Spitznamen "Schwimmi" genannt wurde, rekrutierte ihre Besucher ausschließlich aus der gehobenen Kasseler Bürgerschaft. Die Bewohner der Altstadt, insbesondere deren Kinder, schwammen unbeaufsichtigt und vor den vorüberfahrenden Kiesschiffen ungeschützt frei in der Fulda, insbesondere von den Bleichen aus. Auch Philipp Scheidemann hatte sich als Junge dort im Wasser getummelt und die Gefahren solch riskanten Schwimmens kennengelernt.
Im Mai 1923 eröffnete er das Flussbad, das sofort von den Kasselern begeistert in Besitz genommen wurde. Im Sommer 1925 wurden 15.000 Besucher gezählt. Bis dahin gab es noch keine andere Stadt, die eine derartige Badeanlage für die Bevölkerung geschaffen hätte. Infolgedessen fand ein großzügiges Modell der gesamten Kasseler Einrichtungen auf der bedeutenden Ausstellung "Gesolei" (für Gesundheit, soziale Fürsorge und Leibesübung) in Düsseldorf besonders unter den Teilnehmern des dort stattfindenden Deutschen Städtetages große Beachtung.
Für 32 Millionen Euro ist aus dem ehemaligen Freibad ein neus Frei- und Hallenbad mit Saunalandschaft gebaut worden. 2009 war man bei der Planung für das Bad von 24 Millionen Euro ausgegangen.
