The ice box was a way to store perishable items indoors without spoiling before mechanical refrigeration was invented. This example is constructed of a thin tin inner wall, an insulating material then a wooden outer case. There are three compartments on this "Ice Box". You would place a block of ice in the upper left compartment which had a tray and drain to catch the melting ice and clear it from the box. The compartment directly below the ice would be used for to store frozen items and the larger compartment for fresh perishables.
