Although it is not especially marked as a memorial bench it is situated very close to a miner's memorial.
The nearby memorial commemorates the 117 year history of Allerton Bywater Colliery between 1875 - 1992 during which time 86 men died in accidents at the coal mine.
The decorative part of the bench shows mines digging out coal, loading up a pit tub with coal, and two miners hauling the pit tub along rails so that it can be winched to the surface.
