Named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992, the Northwest Historic District was one of South Florida’s first African American settlements. From the 1920s to the 1960s, due in part to legally enforced segregation, the Northwest became a vibrant economic, social and cultural mecca for Blacks of all income strata. Originally its borders stretched as far south as Fern Street and north to 23rd Street, from the Seaboard (CSX) Railroad to the Fl East Coast Railroad. Today, the historic boundaries extend from 2nd Street north to LA Kirksey/15th Street, between Tamarind and Rosemary avenues.
