The State of Oklahoma's newest "Passport" program to encourage tourism in the state covers sixty-six stops along historic Route 66. One of these is Lucille's Roadhouse in Weatherford. John Steinbeck gave the name "Mother Road" to Route 66 in his novel The Grapes Of Wrath and Lucille Hammons was the (self-proclaimed) "Mother of the Mother Road." She and her husband ran a fuel station a few miles east of here for fifty-nine years, surviving accidents, the Great Depression, and I-40. The décor of Lucille's Roadhouse echoes that old station with vintage fuel pumps outside, and there is plenty of Route 66 memorabilia inside. It is free to enter and have your passport stamped but please take a table and enjoy some great roadhouse cooking!
