NL Op de website van de historische kring Gente staat dat de eerste vermelding van het dorp Gendt uit 793 dateert. In dat jaar geven een zekere Walter en Richlint goederen in ‘gannite marca’ aan het Benedictijner klooster in Lorsch, zo’n 20 km ten noorden van Mannheim. Tot 1228 is Gendt bezit geweest van het klooster Lorsch; in dat jaar wordt het dorp gekocht door de graaf van Gelre. Gendt kent dan een bloeiende handel. Twee belangrijke oorzaken zijn daarvoor aan te wijzen. Niet alleen de bewoners van de hoeven uit het dorp moeten op de Munnikhof cijns betalen, maar ook uit de (verre) omtrek komen belastingplichtigen op het feest van Maria ten Hemelopneming naar hier om het hunne af te dragen. Zo wordt Gendt een regionaal economisch centrum. Deze positie wordt versterkt door de gunstige ligging aan de Waal. Het is niet onwaarschijnlijk dat juist daarom Otto II in 1233 ‘met keizerlijke en koninklijke goedkeuring’ Gendt stadsrechten verleent (Statuta Gannitensia). Als gevolg van de handelsactiviteiten is Gendt lid geweest van de Duitse Hanze, een verbond van steden met als prominente leden o.a. Hamburg, Lübeck en Bremen. Ondanks de stadsrechten heeft Gendt zich nooit tot stad ontwikkeld en is het altijd een dorp gebleven.

Gent in België is een grote stad maar ook ouder dan Gendt. Van wikipedia:
Gent (Frans: Gand) is de hoofdstad van de Belgische provincie Oost-Vlaanderen en van het arrondissement Gent. Gent heeft een oppervlakte van 15.774 hectare en telt ruim 260.000 (ingeschreven) inwoners (2020), waarmee het naar inwonertal de op een na grootste gemeente van België is, na Antwerpen. De stad is tevens de hoofdplaats van het kieskanton Gent en telt vijf gerechtelijke kantons.

Gent ontstond uit Keltische woonkernen in het gebied van de samenvloeiing van de Leie en de Schelde. In de middeleeuwen groeide Gent onder impuls van een bloeiende wolnijverheid uit tot een van de grootste steden van Europa. Ook de vlas- en linnennijverheid en het stapelrecht op graan dat Gent verwierf droegen aanzienlijk bij tot haar welvaart. Na een korte calvinistische periode kende de stad een zeker verval dat pas keerde tegen het einde van de 18e eeuw, toen de katoennijverheid Gent tot een van de eerste industriesteden van het Europese vasteland maakte. In het Hof ten Walle, het latere Prinsenhof, werd op 24 februari 1500 de latere keizer Karel V geboren. In de stad werden de Pacificatie van Gent (1576) en de Vrede van Gent (1814) ondertekend.
ENG The website of the historical circle Gente states that the first mention of the village of Gendt dates from 793. In that year a certain Walter and Richlint gave goods in "gannite marca" to the Benedictine monastery in Lorsch, about 20 km north of Mannheim. Gendt was in possession of the Lorsch monastery until 1228; in that year the village was bought by the count of Gelre. Gendt then had a flourishing trade. There are two main reasons for this. Not only the residents of the farms from the village have to pay tribute at the Munnikhof, but also taxpayers from the (far) area come here at the feast of Mary of the Assumption to pay theirs. Gendt thus becomes a regional economic center. This position is reinforced by its favorable location on the Waal. It is not unlikely that this is precisely why Otto II grants Gendt city rights "with imperial and royal approval" in 1233 (Statuta Gannitensia). As a result of the trading activities, Gendt has been a member of the German Hanseatic League, an alliance of cities with prominent members including Hamburg, Lübeck and Bremen. Despite the city rights, Gendt never developed into a city and it has always remained a village.

Ghent in Belgium is a big city, but also older than Gendt. From wikipedia:
Ghent (French: Gand) is the capital of the Belgian province of East Flanders and of the district of Ghent. Ghent has an area of ??15,774 hectares and has more than 260,000 (registered) inhabitants (2020), making it the second largest municipality in Belgium by population, after Antwerp. The city is also the capital of the electoral canton of Ghent and has five judicial cantons.

Ghent originated from Celtic residential areas in the area of the confluence of the Leie and the Scheldt. In the Middle Ages, under the impetus of a flourishing wool industry, Ghent grew into one of the largest cities in Europe. The flax and linen industry and the staple rights to grain that Ghent acquired also contributed significantly to its prosperity. After a short Calvinist period, the city experienced a certain decline that only reversed towards the end of the 18th century, when the cotton industry made Ghent one of the first industrial cities on the European mainland. In Hof ten Walle, the future Prinsenhof, the future Emperor Charles V was born on February 24, 1500. In the city, the Pacification of Ghent (1576) and the Peace of Ghent (1814) were signed.
