These days the time ball that existed upon the Eisenhower Executive Office Building is far from a memory. Most buildings are too tall that even if it was still there, it would be seen by a very few. Security in the area has not helped in that regard either. In the last 25 years as well, from Pennsylvania Avenue closing to vehicular traffic in 1995 to today where a lot of areas between H and E Streets have been closed to even foot traffic. If you do want to see the former location of the time ball, the best would have been from Pennsylvania Avenue but now you will have to settle for the Ellipse view which is best near (just south) the Butt-Millet Memorial Fountain. ---------------------------------- "From 1885 until 1936, a time-ball located on the flag pole of the East Center roof of the building operated to signal noon. It was similar in action (although smaller and not as flashy) as the one seen on New Year's Eve in Times Square. It was once considered a customary feature of ports - navigators could use the ball to check chronometers." - White House History
