Die Überlieferung berichtet, dass er als Beichtvater der Königin das Beichtgeheimnis auch unter Folter durch den König selbst nicht brach und so in die Moldau geworfen wurde, wo er den Tod fand.
Johannes' Leichnam wurde angeblich an der heutigen Karlsbrücke gefunden, zunächst in der Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche bestattet und 1396 in den Veitsdom in Prag überführt.
Bald wurde er als Märtyrer verehrt. Johannes' Denkmal auf der Prager Karlsbrücke, das 1693 errichtet wurde, machte ihn zu einem der wichtigsten Brückenheiligen.
Johannes wurde am 31. Mai 1721 von Papst Innozenz XIII. selig- und am 19. März 1729 von Papst Benedikt XIII. heiliggesprochen.
Die Statue hier steht auf dem Kirchenplatz der St.Othmarkirche. Wer sich fragt, warum hier ein Schutzpatron der Brücken steht: Hier war einst eine Brücke über den Wehrgraben der Kirche.

Tradition reports that, as the queen's confessor, he did not break the confessional secret even when tortured by the king himself and was thrown into the Moldau, where he died.
John's body was allegedly found at today's Charles Bridge, initially buried in the Holy Cross Church and transferred to St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague in 1396.
Soon he was venerated as a martyr. John's monument on Prague's Charles Bridge, erected in 1693, made him one of the most important bridge saints.
John was beatified on May 31, 1721 by Pope Innocent XIII. and canonized on March 19, 1729 by Pope Benedict XIII.
The statue here stands on the church yard of the St.Othmarkirche. If you wonder why there is a patron saint of bridges: Once here was a bridge over the church moat.
