On April 19, 1995, a devastating bombing occurred at the Alfred Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. A total of 168 people died that day, and several hundred were injured. The disaster rocked the city, the state, the country and the world.
One hundred miles southeast of Oklahoma City, the families of Emerson Elementary School in Coalgate, OK were emotionally affected enough to place a memorial to honor those victims as well as the hundreds of volunteers who took place in the rescue operation.
Embedded in a row of pavers in the sidewalk in front of the Coal County Courthouse, a granite plaque was set in 1995 which reads:
In memory of
O.K.C. Bombing
victims and
volunteers 1995
Emerson Elem.
