During the colonial era, the congregationalism was the dominant religion. In 1747, Joseph Hastings broke with the prevailing congregational church and in 1769 he founded the First Baptist Church in Suffield, CT. However, the Baptist were not welcome in Suffield and Hasting built his church three miles west of the town center. When the United States gained it's independence, a greater degree of religious freedom prevailed. In 1805, the Second Baptist Church was organized and, in 1840, they built their church on North Main Street in the town center.
The two-story high Second Baptist Church building was designed by local architect Henry A. Sykes (1810-1660) in the Greek Revival style. The symmetrical brick building has a set of brick steps leading up to a portico entrance which is supported by six fluted Ionic columns. Above the pediment is a square belfry tower with louvered windows, and a smaller rounded section with a gold dome topped with a weather vane. The sides of the building are five bays wide with shuttered double hung windows on the first and second levels of each bay. At the basement level there are small rectangular windows at each bay.
