1. Bjerg-etapen (Padborg til Sønderhav - 15 km)
2. Tegl-etapen (Sønderhav til Brunsnæs - 20 km)
3. Krage-etapen (Brunsnæs til Gammelmark - 19 km)
4. Strand-etapen (Gammelmark til Høruphav - 19 km)

English:
One of the most popular hiking trail in Denmark is the legendary Gendarmstien/Border guard trail. The trail is named after the border guards who patroled along the Danish German border.
The Border Gendarmerie was formed in 1839 to protect customs officials at the border of the duchies along the River Elbe. After the defeat against the Germans in 1864, the Danish border moved north to the watercourse “Kongeåen” - and in 1866, the gendarmerie moved with it. At the Reunification in 1920, the border gendarmes moved south again and patrolled along the current border from the Wadden Sea to the west to Als ’southern tip to the east.

In 1958, border control passed to the police, and the gendarmerie corps was history after more than 100 years of service. However, fragments of the Gendarme Path were still there, and in the 1980s the historical path was once again opened to the public.

The trail was established in 1980 long before hiking became so popular in Denmark as it is today.

The trail is divided into five stages:
1. Mountain-etapen (Padborg to Sønderhav - 15 km)
2. Brick-etapen (Sønderhav to Brunsnæs - 20 km)
3. Crow etapen (Brunsnæs to Gammelmark - 19 km)
4. Beach-etapen (Gammelmark to Høruphav - 19 km)
5. Mill-etapen (Høruphav to Skovby - 10 km)

During the beautiful trail you will pass several free campsites with woodden shelter or where you can put up your tent for one night. The trail is well marked with signs showing the route or telling you where to leave if you need to buy food at the nearest store.
This is probably why it is one of the most popular hiking trails in Denmark.
