The museum is housed in the Pennsylvania Railroad's former Master Mechanic's Building constructed in 1882. The model train layout is located on the third floor of the museum.
The exposed portion of the HO gauge layout is about fifteen feet long and four feet wide. There are multiple tracks with operating trains. both freight and passenger. The trains are set in motion at a touch of a push button switch. During our visit there were three active trains with eight to twenty pieces of rolling stock. The trains would travel the length of the exposed track and enter a tunnel and disappear behind the wall of the room then reappear at the mouth of a different tunnel. The trains would travel on lap with each touch of the button.
There are plenty of buildings, cars, animal and people figures placed on the realistic landscape. There are tracked railroad yards with large buildings that are made to resemble the railroad shops that made Altoona the "Railroad City" of the 1940's and early 1950's
