La brasserie Motte-Cordonnier

Une des plus vieilles brasseries de France

Véritable château de l’industrie, la brasserie Motte-Cordonnier, encore visible aujourd’hui, possède un riche passé brassicole. Datant de 1650, c’est la brasserie la plus ancienne d’Armentières. L’ancien bâtiment avait été construit en 1891 et détruit durant la Première Guerre Mondiale. En 1922, les établissements Motte-Cordonnier sont érigés de nouveau, à un endroit stratégique desservi par la route, la voie ferrée et la lys. Dans les années 1970, les nouveaux modes de consommation impulsent l’explosion de la grande distribution et modifie le modèle de production de la bière.

Motte-Cordonnier, première brasserie moderne et industrielle du nord

A sa création, le projet fut de construire une brasserie industrielle et moderne. Le brasseur René Motte, souhaitant perpétuer la tradition familiale du brassage reprend les rennes et s’attelle à agrandir l’outil de production. Car à l’époque la Brasserie fournit plus de 400 estaminets de la ville d’Armentières. En 1914 la guerre repousse le projet d’agrandissement. Trop proche de la ligne de front, la Brasserie subit des dégâts importants qui la rendent inopérable. En 1920 la Brasserie est réimplantée le long de la Lys : usine à château, dont l’architecture rappelle celle des beffrois aux briques rouge du Nord. La nouvelle usine est inaugurée en 1923, elle comporte cette fois une brasserie et une malterie, propice à améliorer les conditions de production de la bière. Tout le processus de brassage a donc lieu sur place. Cependant un nouveau principe de fermentation de la levure à basse température y est réalisé. Il assure la fabrication d’une bière stable toute l’année dans un contexte où les brasseries du Nord sont encore très artisanales et ont une production de proximité.

Un patrimoine industriel exceptionnel

Classé monument historique en 1999, ce château de l’industrie possède encore 3 cuves en cuivre. Grâce à son agrandissement et l’utilisation des dernières technologies pour le brassage, la production de bière augmente considérablement. La brasserie réalisait jusqu’en 1965 l’opération de maltage mais son activité brassicole cesse en 1993. Aujourd’hui le temple de la bière de la ville d’Armentières va cependant renaître grâce à ses héritiers.

A true castle of industry, the Motte-Cordonnier brewery, still visible today, has a rich brewing past. Dating from 1650, it is the oldest brewery in Armentières. The old building was built in 1891 and destroyed during World War I. In 1922, the Motte-Cordonnier establishments were set up again, at a strategic location served by the road, the railway line and the lily. In the 1970s, new consumption patterns spurred the explosion of mass distribution and changed the beer production model.

Motte-Cordonnier, the first modern and industrial brewery in the north

When it was created, the project was to build an industrial and modern brewery. The brewer René Motte, wishing to perpetuate the family brewing tradition, takes over the reins and strives to expand the production tool. Because at the time, the Brasserie supplied more than 400 taverns in the city of Armentières. In 1914 the war rejected the expansion project. Too close to the front line, the Brewery suffered significant damage which made it inoperable. In 1920 the Brewery was relocated along the Lys: a factory with a castle, the architecture of which is reminiscent of the red brick belfries of the North. The new factory was inaugurated in 1923, this time it includes a brewery and a malt house, conducive to improving the conditions of beer production. The entire brewing process therefore takes place on site. However, a new principle of yeast fermentation at low temperature is implemented there. It ensures the manufacture of a stable beer all year round in a context where the breweries of the North are still very artisanal and have a local production.

An exceptional industrial heritage

Listed as a historical monument in 1999, this industrial castle still has 3 copper vats. Thanks to its expansion and the use of the latest technology for brewing, the production of beer is increasing considerably. The brewery carried out the malting operation until 1965, but its brewing activity ceased in 1993. Today, however, the beer temple of the city of Armentières will be reborn thanks to its heirs.
