The bridge crosses Cock Beck, a small stream that in the past had a larger flow and was known as Cock River.

The track over the bridge shares access to Lead Hall Farm and a public bridleway that passes close to an old church. Both are close to the site of a small Medieval Manor House and the village of Lead that no longer exists.

The bridge is near to the site of two large Medieval battles where many men were killed in hand to hand fighting as they tries to cross the river. It was said that the river ran red with the amount of blood spilt in battle.
