This is the third Congregational church in Northfield. The first Triniarian Congregational Church was founded in 1825 and was razed in 1889 to make way for the second Victorian style Trinitarian Congregational Church which was used by the students of the Northfield Seminary, a school for girls founded by evangelist Dwight Moody, and destroyed by fire on January 21, 1978. The present church was built in 1979 on a much smaller scale since the congregation diminished as the Northfield Seminary became the more inclusive Northfield Academy.

The present Colonial Revival style Trinitarian Congregational Church was designed by Arland Augustus Dirlam and constructed by the Wetter Company. The west facing front of the church features a portico and pediment supported by four Doric columns. The main block of the church has a gable roof, a central double door entrance with a transom window. Rising from the roof is a tower with a circular window, an octagonal belfry with louvered windows and a tapered octagonal steeple topped by a weathervane. The sided of the church are five bays wide, each with a rectangular window. A transept projects from the main block as does a apse on the east end.
