The little rural town of Dietrich, Idaho is built on the south slope of Crater Butte, but few residents know about its collapsed volcanic crater. It is not visible from town and access to the rim of the crater is restricted to rugged, unimproved vehicle trails. The crater is 0.91 miles long and 0.57 miles wide. Elevation at the crater rim is 4,432 feet, with the bottom of the crater being 300 feet below the rim. Steep rocky cliffs form the inside crater walls. A rugged trail for all-terrain-vehicles goes down into the crater from the south rim and almost makes it to the top of the north rim.

Crater Butte is located mostly on U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land, but the southern tip is in a "school section" (Section 36) and is managed by the Idaho Department of Lands. The desert land of the butte and its crater are leased to local ranchers for livestock grazing.
