On the Site of the Birthplace (1738) of General Rufus Putnam, the present house of brick with marble trim, was built in 1818. General Putnam planned the fortification of Dorchester Heights and was made chief engineer of the new army; in 1779 he assisted Israel Putnam in completing the defenses of West Point. His crowning achievement, however, was one of peace: he was a founder of the Ohio Company and superintended the settlement of Marietta, Ohio.
