In 1874 werd het Oogziekenhuis Rotterdam opgericht door dr. J.H. de Haas, die tevens de enige oogarts was. Als record zag hij 115 patiënten op één ochtend. Hij was een gedreven man die de oogheelkunde op hoog niveau uitoefende. In dat eerste jaar werden op de 24 bedden, 230 patiënten opgenomen. In 1901 werd dr. De Haas opgevolgd door zijn zoon, dr. H.K. de Haas. Pas toen werden twee collega oogartsen toegelaten.
Bij het bombardement van 1940 werd het oogziekenhuis volledig verwoest en werd tijdens de oorlogsjaren als gestart aan de nieuwbouw op de locatie zoals we hem nu kennen.
Het huidige onderkomen van Het Oogziekenhuis is een ontwerp van architect A. van der Steur. Eind 1942 werd de eerste paal geslagen, in 1943 werd de bouw door de bezetter stilgelegd. In 1948 werd het herbouwde grootste oogziekenhuis van Nederland met 101 bedden officieel geopend.
Door de vele patiënten werd een uitbreiding noodzakelijk. In 1956 werd aan het bestaande pand een nieuw gedeelte toegevoegd.

The Rotterdam Eye Hospital was founded in 1874 by Dr. J.H. de Haas, who was also the only ophthalmologist. As a record, he saw 115 patients in one morning. He was a passionate man who practiced ophthalmology at a high level. In that first year, 230 patients were admitted to the 24 beds. In 1901 Dr. De Haas was succeeded by his son, Dr. H.K. De Haas. Only then were two fellow ophthalmologists admitted.
In the bombing of 1940, the eye hospital was completely destroyed and during the war years a start was made on the new construction on the location as we know it today.
The current accommodation of the eye hospital is a design by architect A. van der Steur. The first pile was driven at the end of 1942 and construction was halted by the occupying forces in 1943. In 1948 the rebuilt largest eye hospital in the Netherlands with 101 beds was officially opened.
Due to the many patients, an extension became necessary. In 1956 a new section was added to the existing building.
