The Sully plantation was an 18th Century home to Richard Bland Lee, a former Virginia Congressman and uncle of General Robert E. Lee. The well resides in the "kitchen yard" and provided water for drinking, cooking, washing and cleaning. The water was drawn by enslaved African Americans who lived in a small cabin not far from the main housing. The well is roughly 36 feet deep and currently has a cover over it for safety.
