Badevogn

The Bathing Machine
Liseleje, the small town on the North Coast, has now, as before, been a well-visited seaside resort in the summer. Previously, there were several seaside hotels where especially the more affluent Copenhageners lived.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, however, it was unthinkable for women to show up in swimwear. And therefore the Bathing Machine was ideal.
A Bathing Machine is a square box on wheels which is pulled by a horse. The Bathing Machine has doors at both ends. You go into the box and change into swimwear. At a signal with a bell or a flag, a horse pulls the Bathing Machine out into the water. And now you can swim completely undisturbed, no naughty men can see anything of your body. When you have finished swimming, the Bathing Machine is pulled back onto the beach. After a fresh swim and a change of clothes, you are ready to have a cup of coffee at the seaside hotel.
