The Conrail N-5G Caboose #18624 is on permanent display at the Wickford Junction plaza in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. This railroad car, painted red with a black roof and yellow hand rails, is in good condition and sits on rails as long as the caboose. It has been at this location since at least 2002.
A short history from the Conrail Caboose Photo Archive:
N5G Class
The Lehigh Valley Railroad had 92 cabooses on the property just before Conrail. They were built between 1939 and 1946 and
numbered 95001-95140. When Conrail was formed in 1976, they reunited with the former LV cabooses that the Penn Central had purchased
in April 1968. Penn Central classified them as N-5G.
Specifications:
Length: 34'
Height at roof line: 11'1/2" (from rail head)
Height of cupola: 2'6" (approximately)
Width: 6'6-3/8"
Weight 44000 lbs.
This caboose stands alone in an open grassy field near a covered community stage. Though there are no other railroad items in the immediate area, it is among the Wickford Junction Shopping Plaza properties and about a five-minute walk from the Commuter Rail station that serves the Providence/Stoughton Line. If you're driving, plenty of space is available just a few steps away in the adjacent WalMart parking lot.
