The town:

Thalheim is a municipality in the district of Brugg in the canton of Aargau with about 800 inhabitants.

Thalheim is located at the end of the Schenkenberg Valley, which stretches from the Aare near Brugg towards the west. Thalheim consists of two separate villages, the older Oberdorf and the much later built-over Unterdorf. In addition, several hamlets and many individual farms belong to the municipality.

The village was settled by Alemanni, the place name first appears in a document in 1064. In the middle of the 13th century the castle Schenkenberg was built above the village by order of the Habsburgs. Since then, the area was administered from there as the Schnkenberg dominion, until it was conquered by Bern in 1460. After that, Schenkenberg was a Bernese bailiwick. However, the castle was abandoned in 1720 due to dilapidation and the bailiff moved to Veltheim. The Bernese rule ended in 1798 with the invasion of the French. Since 1802 Thalheim has been part of the then newly founded Canton of Aargau.

Viticulture was traditionally very strong in this agricultural community. It fell into a severe crisis due to phylloxera and mildew from the middle of the 19th century. Many inhabitants lost their livelihood and had to emigrate. The village lost more than half of its inhabitants after 1850. Since about 1980, the population has been growing again due to commuters, but the number of inhabitants of the 19th century is far from being reached again.

The town hall:

The town hall of Thalheim is located at the Gässli in the center of the old village. It is a three-story building with a gabled roof and a covered porch. A multi-purpose hall is attached to the side, which is probably also used as a gymnasium for the school behind it. The house maybe dates from the late 20th century.

Thalheim ist eine Gemeinde im Bezirk Brugg im Kanton Aargau mit etwa 800 Einwohnern.

Thalheim liegt am Ende des Schenkenbergertals, das sich in der Nähe von Brugg von der Aare gegen Westen erstreckt. Thalheim besteht aus zwei getrennten Ortsteilen, dem älteren Oberdorf und dem deutlich später überbauten Unterdorf. Daneben gehören noch mehrere Weiler und viele Einzelhöfe zur Gemeinde.

Das Dorf wurde von Alemannen besiedelt, der Ortsname taucht 1064 erstmals in einer Urkunde auf. In der Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts entstand oberhalb des Dorfes die Burg Schenkenberg im Auftrag der Habsburger. Seither wurde die Gegend als Herrschaft Schnkenberg von dort aus verwaltet, bis sie 1460 von Bern erobert wurde. Danach war Schenkenberg eine Bernische Landvogtei. Allerdings wurde die Burg 1720 wegen Baufälligkeit aufgegeben und der Landvogt zog nach Veltheim. Die Berner Herrschaft endete 1798 mit dem Einmarsch der Franzosen. Seit 1802 ist Thalheim Teil des damals neu gegründeten Kanton Aargau.

Der Weinbau war traditionell sehr stark in dieser landwirtschaftlichen Gemeinde. Er geriet durch Reblaus und Mehltau ab der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts in eine schwere Krise. Viele Bewohner verloren ihre Existenzgrundlage und mussten auswandern. Das Dorf verlor nach 1850 mehr als die Hälfte seiner Einwohner. Seit etwa 1980 ist wieder die Bevölkerung durch Wegpendler wieder am wachsen, die Bewohnerzahl des 19. Jahhunderts ist aber noch längst nicht wieder erreicht.

Das Gemeindehaus:

Das Gemeindehaus von Thalheim steht am Gässli im Zentrum des alten Dorfkerns. Es ist ein dreistöckiges Gebäude mit einem Giebeldach und einer überdachten Vorhalle. Seitlich ist eine Mehrzweckhalle angebaut, die vermutlich auch als Turnhalle für die dahinter liegende Schule genutzt wird. Das Haus stammt vermutlich aus dem ausgehenden 20. Jahrhundert.
