If you are on the way from Lake Toba to Bukittinggi on Sumatra, this is more or less a mandatory stop. The large market halls with the traditional Batak gable roofs can be seen from a distance. Inside you will find a huge wet market, where you can find all the fresh products you can think of: fish, meat, vegetables and fruit. The meat department is especially interesting, provided you are not too soft-hearted! For example, you will find cow heads and tails and of course live chickens. The Bataks are Christians so you can also buy all parts of the pig here, which is special in mainly Islamic Indonesia. Balige is about a two-hour drive from Lake Toba; a great place for a coffee break! Have a cup of freshly brewed kopi tubruk here in one of the many cozy little warungs.
