DE: Die Kapelle St. Maria Magdalena und Lazarus wurde 1243 als Hospitalskapelle auf dem heutigen Kölner Friedhof Melaten errichtet. Da in der Gegend um die Kapelle an Lepra erkrankte Menschen ihre Wohnstätten hatten verfügte die Kapelle zuerst über zwei Kirchenschiffe, 1475 erfolgte ein größerer Umbau und der heilige Johannes wurde neben Lazarus Patron der Kapelle. Im Jahr 1767 wurde die Leprosensiedlung geschlossen und die Kapelle war erst mal ungenutzt.
Einige Jahre später nach der französischen Besetzung des Rheinlandes im Jahr 1794 wurde der zentrale Friedhof Melaten geplant und bis zum Jahr 1810 angelegt, die Kapelle wurde renoviert und zur Friedhofskapelle umgewidmet. Im zweiten Weltkrieg wurde die Kapelle beschädigt und 1952 wieder aufgebaut, seitdem besitzt sie ein Türmchen mit einer Glocke aus der Kölner Rathauskapelle. Am 1. Juli 1980 wurde die Kapelle unter der Nummer 255 in die Kölner Denkmalliste aufgenommen.
Auf dem etwa 435.000 qm großen Friedhof Melaten befinden sich heute über 55.000 Gräber, damit ist der Friedhof Melaten der größte Kölner Friedhof. Es gibt drei Hauptwege auf einem rechteckigen Raster. Durch den Parkcharakter der Friedhofsanlage kommen viele Kölner Bürger zur Erholung auf den Friedhof. Besucht werden kann der Friedhof von 8 bis 17 Uhr im Winter und von 7 bis 20 Uhr im Sommer.

EN: The chapel of St. Maria Magdalena and Lazarus was built in 1243 as a hospital chapel on what is now Cologne's Melaten cemetery. Since people suffering from leprosy had their homes in the area around the chapel, the chapel initially had two naves, in 1475 a major renovation took place and St. John became patron of the chapel alongside Lazarus. In 1767 the leper settlement was closed and the chapel was unused for the time being.
A few years later after the French occupation of the Rhineland in 1794, the central Melaten cemetery was planned and laid out until 1810, the chapel was renovated and rededicated as a cemetery chapel. The chapel was damaged in the Second World War and rebuilt in 1952, since then it has had a turret with a bell from the Cologne town hall chapel. On July 1st, 1980, the chapel was added to Cologne's list of monuments under the number 255.
Today there are over 55,000 graves in the approximately 435,000 square meter Melaten cemetery, making the Melaten cemetery the largest in Cologne. There are three main routes on a rectangular grid. Due to the park character of the cemetery complex, many Cologne citizens come to the cemetery to relax. The cemetery can be visited from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in winter and from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in summer.
