Taken from Wikipedia, "Pulitzer Fountain is an outdoor fountain located in Manhattan's Grand Army Plaza in New York. The fountain is named after newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer who died in 1911 having bequeathed $50,000 for the creation of the fountain. Pulitzer intended his fountain to be "like those in the Place de la Concorde, Paris, France." The fountain was designed by the architect Thomas Hastings, and crowned by a statue conceived by the sculptor Karl Bitter. The fountain was dedicated in May 1916. One hundred years later it looked like this:"
"The plaza from Fifty-eight to Sixtieth Street provides a formalized entrance to the park; it also serves as an impressive forecourt for the stately hotels surrounding it. The official name, seldom mused, is Grand Army Plaza. In the northern half is the Statue of General William Tecumseh Sherman, and in the southern half, the Pulizer Memorial Fountain. The Sherman statue, which brought fame to Augustus Saint Gaudens when it was unveiled at the Paris exposition in 1900, was placed in the plaza in 1903. Modeled with fine precision, this bronze and gilt equestrian statue is one of the city's most impressive monument." -- New York City, 1939
