Taken from Wikipedia, "William Tecumseh Sherman, also known as the Sherman Memorial or Sherman Monument,[1][2] is an outdoor sculpture of William Tecumseh Sherman by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, located at Grand Army Plaza in Manhattan, New York. Cast in 1902 and dedicated on May 30, 1903, the gilded-bronze monument consists of an equestrian statue and a female figure, set on a Stony Creek granite pedestal."
"Since 1903 Augustus Saint-Gaudens' equestrian statue of General William T. Sherman has marked the Plaza entrance (Fifth Avenue and Fifty-ninth Street) to Central Park, although horse-drawn hack and Karl Bitter's Abundance, a nude female figure whose gold leaf has been recently renewed, are also identified in this corner. The surrounding architecture has been photographed so often that few visitors fail to recognize the dignified mansard of the Plaza Hotel and the terraced setbacks of the new apartment hotels, towering above the formal arrangement of the Plaza entrance itself, and reflected in the Pond at the parks' southeastern corner." -- New York City, 1939
