The concept of a supervised playground was where a centralized area of playground equipment and other recreational activities could be conducted concurrently so that parents could bring their children to a local area and could watch them playing. This was a national trend by 1925 when this Lion's Field Playground was designed and built by the Lions Club of San Antonio in conjunction with city planners.
A plaque mounted on the base of the iconic white marble lion carving that is beside Broadway states the claim: "This was the FIRST supervised playground West of the Mississippi River." The metal plaque at the base of the lion sculpture reads as follows:
" Lions Field
This parcel of land given to the City of San Antonio July 1925 by the San Antonio founder Lions Club for use as a children's recreational park.
This park was the first supervised playground West of the Mississippi River. It was initially furnished and developed by the San Antonio Lions Club in cooperation with the City of San Antonio.
Re-dedicated October 8, 1994 as a multi-purpose use park for children and adults."
