This piece of boardwalk lies on the northern slopes of the volcano of Mt Tongariro, along the Ketetahi track section of the famous Tongariro Crossing. It protects a wet area of unstable ground and remaining lahar damage. A mud lahar from the Te Maari craters passed through this part of the track recently causing track and stream damage with some damage to the native bush surrounding this boardwalk. The wooden boardwalk provides a stable walking area.
Note: Do not hesitate on this part of the track, it is a Lahar Hazard Zone. Be aware of your surroundings, strange noises etc. and read the signs!
Parking: At the Ketetahi Carpark at the northern side of Mt Tongariro, no need to walk the whole Crossing Track to see this boardwalk, just pop in the Ketetahi end of the track.
Approximate boardwalk length (feet): 150
What is the boardwalk over?: Unstable ground and lahar damage.
Boardwalk material: Wood boards.
