The Canadian monument in Meppel is a standing plaque with text in Dutch and English. Above the text is the emblem of the Toronto Scottish Regiment, with a tulip on the left amidst maple leaves and three maple leaves on the right. Below the text plaque are etched tulips that appear to sprout from the maple leaves on the pedestal.
The Canadian flag depicts a maple leaf; tulips are a typical Dutch symbol. Thus, the monument represents the hope that was possible through the sacrifices of Canadian soldiers, according to one of the initiators.
The text at the front of the monument reads:
"THE TORONTO SCOTTISH REGIMENT (M.G.)
ON 13 APRIL 1945, THE TORONTO SCOTTISH REGIMENT
(MACHINE GUN) FROM TORONTO, CANADA ENTERED MEPPEL TO
THUNDEROUS CHEERS. AFTER FIVE YEARS OF OCCUPATION ITS
CITIZENS WERE FREE ONCE AGAIN. IN THEIR KILTS OF HODDEN GREY
THE OFFICERS AND MEN OF THE TORONTO SCOTTISH VOLUNTARILY
LEFT THEIR LOVED ONES TO FIGHT TYRANNY IN THE NAME OF WORLD
PEACE. THEY FAITHFULLY SERVED CANADA AND THE PEOLPLE OF
THE NETHERLANDS. DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF ALL WHO
SERVE FREEDOM'S CAUSE."
The text on the back of the monument reads:
'NETHERLANDS-CANADA, FOREVER LINKED BY DEEDS AND DREAMS'.
