Het gebied Lochtenrek ligt tussen Makkinga en Oosterwolde en herbergt een voor Friesland uniek laat-paleolitisch archeologisch monument. Het paleolitisch tijdperk is de oudste periode in de voorgeschiedenis van de mens en zijn materiële cultuur.
De vondsten van gids-artefacten, haardplaatsen en barnsteen tonen doorgangskampjes uit de Hamburg- en Federmessercultuur aan. Ook bewoning ten tijde van het mesolithicum en het neolithicum is met archeologische vondsten vastgesteld. Het gebied was een veel gebruikte trekroute voor dier en mens. Er zijn oeroude botresten aangetroffen van beer, bever, edelhert, oeros en wild zwijn.

The Lochtenrek area is located between Makkinga and Oosterwolde and houses a late Paleolithic archaeological monument unique to Friesland. The paleolithic era is the oldest period in the prehistory of man and his material culture. The finds of guide artifacts, hearths and amber demonstrate transit camps from the Hamburg and Federmesser culture. Inhabitation during the Mesolithic and Neolithic times has also been established with archaeological finds. The area was a frequently used migration route for animals and humans. Ancient bone remains of bear, beaver, red deer, aurochs and wild boar have been found.
