"The parish of Saint-Étienne was mentioned in a charter from the Duke of Normandy in 1006. Built on an eminence of land, the church overlooks the port and accommodates an essentially maritime population. At the beginning of the 16th century, the he abbot of the Holy Trinity, Antoine Bohier known as “the Great Builder”, decides to build a new, larger building to replace the medieval church that has become too small.
The work, which began in 1506, was not completed due to the departure of the abbot and the lack of money. The nave, which should have been very important, was never built. During the Renaissance, only the transept, the choir, the south portal (current entrance portal classified as a Historic Monument) were built, decorated with a tympanum representing the martyrdom of Saint Stephen.
In 1563, a fire seriously damaged the building: the Renaissance Tower was replaced for a time by a modest bell tower. Threatened with destruction after the French Revolution, the building was saved by sailors, restored and embellished in the 19th century.
It was in 1884 that the architect Camille Albert undertook the reconstruction of the current square tower, the sculptures of which were never completed. The building therefore combines the late Gothic and the early Renaissance with the neo-Gothic of the 19th century. "
