This is a rather interesting early model. Note how the inscription scroll (which is chipped on one side) is held down by the log across the top, missing part of the handle for the hatchet embedded in it. Ivy wraps around the trunk, and the Woodmen Circle emblem is in relief, the tools being fairly prominent. The inscription reads:
Josephine Lewis
Died
[No]V, 23, 1901
[Ag]ed 40 Years.
[Ble]ssed are they who die
[in] the Lord.
Mrs. Lewis's Woodmen Circle Grove is identified on a peeled-back section of bark at the bottom of the trunk, "Muskogee Grove No. 5, Ind. Terr." Oklahoma was still a few years from statehood at the time, and as Mr. Lewis had passed on in 1898, it appears that she went to live with family in Muskogee, where she died in 1901.
Was the inscription legible?: Yes
