This is one of 4 surviving, 1 mile G.P.O boundary markers. Unique to the North East town of Darlington.
10 of them first appeared on a map in 1897(they do not appear in the preceding map of 1854). There is 4 surviving now. The prevailing theory behind these unique oddities is the GPO was given the monopoly on running the telegram service in 1870. Telegrams were delivered free to people within a 1 mile radius of the main post office. The posts were mainly found in the more affluent west end of the town. They are measured from the towns main post office at the time. Which was in Northgate. They seem to mark out the routes the post boys would take. So the theory is that these marked the boundaries where the post boys had to charge for delivery beyond these posts
