"Classée par les Monuments et sites, la ferme-château de Villers constitue un magnifique exemple de ferme du XVIème siècle.

Composée d’un corps de logis en pierre calcaire, d’une grange et d’étables entourant une cour pavée, la ferme compte également une chapelle érigée entre le logis et les étables. Elle est dédiée à Sainte Rolende : c’est ici que serait morte la célèbre sainte, vénérée depuis le Moyen-âge par les pèlerins le lundi de Pentecôte et à l’origine de la Marche Sainte-Rolende de Gerpinnes.
Selon la légende, Rolende était la fille de Didier, roi des Lombards. Après le siège de Pavie par Charlemagne, celui-ci fut exilé à Corbie avec sa famille. Pour fuir un mariage arrangé avec Oger, fils du roi d’Écosse, et consacrer sa vie à Dieu, elle entreprit un long voyage vers un couvent à Cologne. Sur cette voie sacrée, elle atteignit Villers-Poterie, où elle fut bien accueillie. Mais là, à la Ferme-Château, elle mourut d’épuisement.
C’était en 774. En témoigne, dans la chapelle, une pierre portant l’inscription « hic obiit Virgo Rollendis » gravée en lettres gothiques."

"Listed as a Monument and Site, the farm-château of Villers is a magnificent example of a 16th century farmhouse.

Composed of a limestone main building, a barn and stables surrounding a paved courtyard, the farm also has a chapel erected between the house and the stables. It is dedicated to Saint Rolende: it is here that the famous saint, venerated since the Middle Ages by pilgrims on Whit Monday and at the origin of the Saint Rolende March of Gerpinnes, is said to have died.
According to legend, Rolende was the daughter of Didier, king of the Lombards. After the siege of Pavia by Charlemagne, the latter was exiled to Corbie with his family. To escape an arranged marriage with Oger, son of the king of Scotland, and to dedicate her life to God, she undertook a long journey to a convent in Cologne. On this holy road she reached Villers-Poterie, where she was welcomed. But there, at the Castle Farm, she died of exhaustion.
This was in 774. In the chapel, a stone bearing the inscription "hic obiit Virgo Rollendis" engraved in Gothic letters bears witness to this."
