Ms. Rattan's final resting place is marked by a modern, gray granite headstone. The family name, "Rattan" is on the reverse, and on the front is this inscription:
Sue Evelyn
Rattan
July 20, 1907
December 14, 2007
"Miss Sue"
Inspirational Teacher
-----
Ms. Rattan has quite the pedigree: Her great-great-grandfather, Thomas Hempstead Rattan, was an early area pioneer who came to Texas in 1840. The Rattan family was linked to another pioneer family, the Throckmortons, by Thomas's sister, Ann, who married James Webb Throckmorton, future Governor of Texas. Mr. Throckmorton's father, Dr. William Edward Throckmorton, was the namesake for both the city and county of Throckmorton, TX, and the name can still be seen on a nearby road.
"Inspirational Teacher" is a nod to her having not only been a teacher in the Anna ISD (just north of here) for 38 years, but also having served as a Sunday school teacher at the First United Methodist Church in Anna.
