The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate order of priests was founded by Eugene De Mazenod in France in 1816. Their mission was to evangelize and convert the poor and the abandoned. In 1849. five Oblate priests sailed to Galveston, TX and began their ministry which soon expanded to East Texas and then to South Texas and into Mexico. By 1884, the Oblates established ministries in San Antonio. By 1903, the Oblates founded the Oblate School of Theology; and then, in 1904, established their headquarters there as well. It is from the date the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate came to Texas and began their teaching and evangelizing the residents of Texas that they base their start date of 1849. One hundred years later, the San Antonio Oblate School of Theology and its campus is thriving and has established an impressive record on outreach to the local community and way beyond. They have remained true to their mission to evangelize their faith.
The centennial marker is a large granite block with rounded features. It is mounted on a low, unpolished gray granite base and the main marker is of polished gray granite that tapers slightly at the top. A world globe forms the top of the primary feature in the top center of the marker. Below the etched globe is a single line of text reading "Oblate Centennial". Below this line of text is a large etching of the Oblates crest, with the date" 1849" on its left side and the date "1949" on its right side. The back of the marker is blank.
Once on campus, you can find the centennial marker along the sidewalk that runs behind (North of) the Immaculate Conception Chapel but beside (West of) the OST graduate school and administration building. It is near a large oak tree that shades the marker, as does the shadows from the two buildings, so you will need to be looking for it, since the gray granite marker blends into the shade gives it a camouflaged appearance.
