La Magdalena Palace and Gardens
SANTANDER Civil architecture
Access
It is located on the Magdalena Peninsula.

Epoch
It was built on the initiative of the Santander City Council, by means of a popular vote in order to be donated to King Alfonso XIII, who used it between 1913 and 1930 as a summer residence. The works began in 1909 and were concluded in 1911, being executed by the Cantabrian architects J. González Riancho and Gonzalo Bringas.

Description
The building has a complex layout, with two main entrances, one to the north, with a portico, and another on the southern façade, with a staircase. The tower and the arrangement of the different bodies of the palace make up a slender and elegant building, to which the wide openings of the south façade give a characteristic luminosity and aesthetics. Inside, the main staircase and its dependencies, lounges, offices, etc. are noteworthy, among which is an Adam-style room. The collection of furniture, photographs and paintings, from the time when the Palace was a royal residence, make up a beautiful and outstanding decoration that evoke the first decades of the 20th century. Among the pictorial works, there are paintings by masters of the time, such as Sorolla, Sotomayor, etc.
