Het project Keilewerf begon in 2014 als initiatief van Stichting Treehouse met een leegstaande loods van 1000 m2 en is eenuitgegroeid tot een broedplaats voor inmiddels ruim 80 (jonge) creatieve ondernemers, verdeeld over 2 gebouwen met een totaal van 6000 m2. Er zijn staalslagers, kunstenaars, meubelmakers en muzikanten neergestreken. Ook filmmakers, surfboardshapers, foodtruckbouwers en stoffeerders hebben hun eigen studio’s of werkplaatsen gebouwd.
Doordat de werfgenoten elkaar ontmoeten en helpen, inspireren ze elkaar. Zo zijn talloze samenwerkingen ontstaan en worden (grote) klussen gezamenlijk opgepakt.
De woningnood drukt op de ruimte in de stad. Er is daardoor steeds minder plek voor startende, creatieve makers in steden zoals Rotterdam maar ook ver daarbuiten. De Keilewerf biedt nu ruimte aan 105 bedrijven maar zit vast aan een eindtermijn ivm met beoogde woningbouw.
In september 2020 is op het gebouw Keilewef 2 deze Urban Canvas onthuld, gemaakt door enkele kunstenaars wat de creatief die dit gebouw uitstraalt nog meer benadrukt.
Het project Urban Canvas zet lege muren van Rotterdamse gebouwen in voor creatief talent.

The Keilewerf project began in 2014 as an initiative of the Treehouse Foundation with an empty warehouse of 1000 m2 and has grown into a breeding ground for more than 80 (young) creative entrepreneurs, divided over 2 buildings with a total of 6000 m2. Steel workers, artists, furniture makers and musicians have settled here. Also filmmakers, surfboard shapers, food truck builders and upholsterers have built their own studios or workshops.
Because the site mates meet and help each other, they inspire each other. This has resulted in countless collaborations and (large) jobs are tackled together.
The housing shortage is weighing on the space in the city. As a result, there is less and less room for starting, creative makers in cities such as Rotterdam, but also far beyond. The Keilewerf now offers space to 105 companies, but is bound to a deadline due to the intended housing construction.
In September 2020, this Urban Canvas was unveiled on the Keilewef 2 building, made by a few artists, which further emphasizes the creativity that this building exudes.
The Urban Canvas project uses empty walls of Rotterdam buildings for creative talent.
