The plaque says, "Beginning as a mess hall in 1932, building 30 and the adjacent barracks building were part of a massive expansion of the base and were the center of Navy life for recruits. The "base mall", building 30, was convenient to the recruit living in buildings 27, 28, and 29 who could visit the barbershop, the post office, stop by for a slice of pizza or grab a meal at a cafeteria. During the early years of NTC men slept in hammocks strung up by rope each night and removed by day, or on the balconies when weather permitted. The courtyard area, or grinder, was used for marching and drilling, but was also used as a practice area for the Navy Band."
