De rivier de Gouwe stroomt dwars door Gouda heen. Dankzij de ligging van onze stad aan deze rivier en de Hollandse IJssel, werd Gouda een belangrijke stad. Veel schepen moesten toentertijd via Gouda varen om van de zuidelijke naar de noordelijke steden te komen. In 1436 werd de Amsterdamse sluis gebouwd. Deze sluis kwam al snel bekend te staan als Amsterdams Verlaat, omdat schepen die naar Amsterdam moesten via deze sluis Gouda verlieten.
Bij de sluis stond een huisje dat eeuwenlang onderdak bood aan de sluiswachter. Dit huisje werd in 2006 herbouwd. Om het huisje te kunnen beheren en te onderhouden, besloten buurtbewoners een schandpaal bij het sluiswachtershuisje te plaatsen voor toeristen en Gouwenaars.
De Goudse schandpaal is een replica van een exemplaar uit een kasteel van Hoenderloo. Vroeger werden overtreders vastgemaakt aan de schandpaal, waarna de bevolking hem mocht bekogelen met straatvuil als hondenpoep, rotte tomaten en dode ratten. Deze manier van straffen bleef in Gouda bestaan tot 1854, maar de straffen werden voornamelijk op de Markt uitgevoerd en niet bij het sluisje.

The Gouwe river flows right through Gouda. Thanks to the location of our city on this river and the Hollandse IJssel, Gouda became an important city. At the time, many ships had to sail via Gouda to get from the southern to the northern cities. The Amsterdam lock was built in 1436. This lock soon became known as Amsterdams Verlaat, because ships that had to go to Amsterdam left Gouda via this lock.
At the lock there was a house that housed the lock keeper for centuries. This cottage was rebuilt in 2006. In order to manage and maintain the house, local residents decided to place a pillory at the lockkeeper's house for tourists and Gouwenaars.
The Gouda pillory is a replica of a copy from a castle in Hoenderloo. In the past, offenders were tied to the pillory, after which the population was allowed to pelt him with street garbage such as dog poo, rotten tomatoes and dead rats. This type of punishment continued in Gouda until 1854, but the punishments were mainly carried out on the Markt and not at the lock.
