English: Jægerspris Nordskov is known for some of its very old trees. Storkeegen, Snogegen and the oldest, Kongeegen, are all worth a visit. The walk to the trees from the parking lot and back again is about 8 km.

Kongeegen is an old oak tree in Jægerspris Nordskov by Jægerspris. It has an estimated age of 1500 - 2000 years, which probably makes it the oldest oak tree in Northern Europe.

The tree may have originally stood on an open moist meadow, and that may be why it is so low-stemmed. The tree has for many years stood in a protected area, which has been drained so that the forest can grow in height, therefore the tree is dying today.

The forest is open for visitors from 6 a.m. to sunset.

Read more about the royal oak on the Danish Dendrological Association's page here: (visit link) Data about the tree is taken from here. The tree is protected from visitors by a fence and the branches are supported by iron bars to prevent the old branches from breaking.
