De afgelopen vijftig jaar is de grondwaterstand in Nederland op veel plaatsen gedaald met enkele decimeters tot zelfs een meter. Dit leidt tot verdroging van de bodem, wat nadelige gevolgen heeft voor veel planten die van een hoog waterpeil afhankelijk zijn. Bovendien neemt ook de kwaliteit van het aanwezige water af. Met name natuurgebieden worden bedreigd door verdroging van de bodem. Tijdens droge zomers krijgen natuurgebieden vaak een extra klap, omdat veel boeren water uit rivieren halen om hun akkers te besproeien. Hierdoor verandert de samenstelling van het al aanwezige water ingrijpend, wat schadelijk is voor de natuur.
Om de stand van het grondwater te meten, staan verspreid over Nederland duizenden onopvallende kunststof peilbuizen. Helaas kun je als voorbijgaande fietser of wandelaar daar niet aan zien hoe het met het grondwater gaat. Op een aantal plekken in Nederland kan dat nu wel. Hier zijn grondwatermeters geplaatst waarop iedereen kan af lezen wat de stand van de grondwater is. Een grondwatermeter bestaat uit een stalen buis die zich voor een paar meter onder de grond bevindt. Via gaten onder in de buis komt het grondwater in de buis te staan. Op dit water drijft een lange koker als een dobber die boven de grond te zien is en de stand van het grondwater aangeeft. De schaalverdeling is in 3 kleuren aangegeven. Deze kleuren geven aan of de waterstand op peil is, te laag of veel te laag.
Ook op deze locatie treft u zo'n grondwatermeter. Het natuurlijk leuk om in uw log te vermelden wat het huidige grondwaterpeil is.
