In 1901, George W. Fouke, founder of Gate City Lumber Co., purchased this property for the construction of an office building. The triangular shape of the property dictated that the State Line Avenue facade of the building consist of a series of set-back, right-angle bays, giving the classical revival building a staggered look

Although the interior of the building was altered significantly with a conversion into apartments, and a second conversion into medical offices, the only exterior alteration to the building was a 1934 application of stucco over the original brick.
